As we come to the end of 2021, and the talks of metaverses and digital objects permeate everyday discussions surrounding the near future, Merge gives you a look into next year’s digital world as one you can touch and hold with your hands.

Around this time last year, we announced Merge would be bringing touchable digital objects into Meta’s Facebook and Instagram Cameras, empowering educators and content creators with augmented reality experiences they can physically hold and share with their followers.

Working with our educator community, we launched Merge Cube Instagram effects in November of 2020, creating the first-handheld holograms for social media using augmented reality.

Starting with educational filters like the Solar System, Cells, and the Human Body, educators can use their Merge Cube to share complex scientific concepts with students anywhere in the world using Instagram.

“The new Merge integration with Instagram puts this innovative technology at the fingertips of teachers and students right where they already are: on social media,” says Josie Bensko, 6th grade science teacher. “In a time where technology is used more than ever for education, I can’t think of a better way to push out meaningful content to students.”

Since the launch of our first Merge Cube effects, the technology has been advancing rapidly with last summer’s launch of mutli-class segmentation to the Spark AR Studio platform.

As the Spark AR Studio platform evolves, and our experiences expand into live streams and video calling, it’s becoming clearer how handheld digital objects (holograms) will be used across the metaverse. Working alongside educators has been at the forefront of everything we build and imagine at Merge, so we are incredibly excited to share this knowledge with our global community.
